New class! In this 6 week intensive pastel class learn to depict people in various places and environments, from gardening to cafes in interesting viewpoints and compositions. In addition, we’ll do at least one study from a master of colour and light. Working from an Impressionistic approach, create a solid sketch in vine charcoal followed by layers of richly coloured pastel strokes. Create lively scenes with this fantastic medium!

About the Instructor:

David Shkolny grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1992). He has been teaching painting and drawing since 2001. David’s artwork is in collections across Europe and North America as well as the Canada Council. Recent public commissions include a painting for Fort Saskatchewan City Hall as well as a pastel for the Kaye Edmonton Clinic.

Student Supplies:

  1. Set of good quality soft (chalk) pastels (Sennelier, Schmincke, etc) minimum of 24 (more is better). It’s helpful to have a set of Nupastel in addition to the ones mentioned (they are harder, but good for detail and blending). The cheaper sets will not have good colour adhesion.
  2. Augment the set with some good darks, (almost black) in blue, green, and brown, as well as a dark red (crimson or darker)
  3. One sheet Canson Mi-Teintes paper (around 18 x 24”) in tobacco, dark grey, or other dark colour (except black) /li>
  4. Pastel Premier paper 12 x 16” in Italian Clay – 2-3 sheets
  5. Soft vine charcoal medium thickness (about ¼” diameter), not too skinny as they break easily and not too fat
  6. Kneadable eraser, 18″ ruler, masking tape, smooth drawing board around 14 X 18” (Masonite Panel works)
  7. Apron (protects clothes from pastels), suitable art clothes, tabletop easel (optional), snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer)
  8. Small bottle of isopropyl alcohol (70-99%) and a couple of flat brushes used for acrylic or oil in 3/4” and 1/4”

You will receive a 20% discount on all art supplies, from your registration until the end of the series!

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
