Summer Week-long Retreat at Artelier!

Join Pastels are the perfect medium to jump into working en plein air! A combination of drawing and painting, start by selecting a strong composition followed by blocking in with light charcoal lines and then luscious layers of pastel.
In this class we will visit different locations in Edmonton as well as short drives to the country side. Places like the MacTaggart Sanctuary/Blackmud Creek area, the North Saskatchewan River valley in addition to outlying areas like the sand hills. Transportation will be required but shouldn’t be an issue if we have enough drivers.

Each class will begin by meeting at Artelier Studios, unless otherwise noted.

Student Supplies:

  1. Set of good quality soft (chalk) pastels (Sennelier, Schmincke, etc) minimum of 24 (more is better). It’s helpful to have a set of Nupastel in addition to the ones mentioned (they are harder, but good for detail and blending). The cheaper sets will not have good colour adhesion.
  2. Augment the set with some good darks, (almost black) in blue, green, and brown, as well as a dark red (crimson or darker)
  3. 4-5 sheet Canson Mi-Teintes paper (around 12 x 16”) in Italian Clay
  4. Pastel Premier paper 12 x 16” in Italian Clay – 4-5 sheets
  5. Soft vine charcoal medium thickness (about ¼” diameter), not too skinny as they break easily and not too fat
  6. Kneadable eraser, 18″ ruler, masking tape, smooth drawing board around 14 X 18” (Masonite Panel works)
  7. Portable Easel (alternative is sitting and resting drawing board on your lap)
  8. Small bottle of isopropyl alcohol (70-99%) and a couple of flat brushes used for acrylic or oil in 3/4” and 1/4”
  9. Apron (protects clothes from pastels)
  10. Paper towels and/or wet wipes, water or food, apron to protect your clothes, portable chair if needed, suitable art clothes, snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer
