Building a Crankie: The Moving Panoramas of the 19th Century

WITH Emilia Fox Hillyer

Sunday, July 13

12:30 PM – 5:30 PM

$100 ($80 + $20 Supply Fee)

Class Limit: 12 Students

Youth and Adults Welcome!

Participants will learn about the history of the crankie– a relic of the 19th century object performance world! A description from P.H. Lin:

“A 19th Century form of popular storytelling, a traditional Crankie is a long, illustrated scroll (also called a “moving panorama” or a “moving backdrop”) that is wound onto two spools, and loaded into a box which has a viewing screen. The scroll is then hand-cranked while the story depicted upon it is presented.”

Participants will build matchbox crankies as proof of concept. Once the participants have completed, they will decorated a pre-fabricated larger crankie box of their choice for their crankie. Participants will illustrate, collage, and assemble the visual elements of the stories they have brought onto the crankie scrolls and attach them to the box. Then, we will share all the narratives we’ve been illustrating.

About the Instructor:

Emilia is a puppeteer who got her start performing basketball tricks at pre-game and halftime shows for organizations like the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, and Harlem Globetrotters. Since then, she’s had her work screened on public access television in Philadelphia, written and performed some solo shows, co-founded Boston’s Fork & Shoe Theatre Coop, and learned how to play the trumpet. She loves cardboard, pickling watermelon in the summertime, balloon volleyball, and They Might Be Giants!
