With their delicate, floppy petals and gentle dance back and forth in the breeze, they are among the most romantic of flowers! Peonies are especially satisfying flowers to paint in watercolours.
In this class, you learn how to paint a simple pink peony starting with a good drawing, the base for a successful detailed watercolour botanical painting. The instructor will guide you on how to trace transfer the reference photo on watercolour paper, identifying the sections where to give emphasis so you won’t get lost in the mass of petals.
Learn the stages step-by-step – painting first the main body of the peony, details, and subtle highlights and shadows using a fine tipped brush. Learn how to pay attention to the natural curves and contours of the flower, adding depth and dimension where needed. You’ll learn the recommended colour pigments for pinks and the greens that’ll go nicely with the delicate colour of the flower.
You will use a reference photo and only little drawing skills is necessary. The instructor will guide you with demos and useful critiques so you can continue to paint similar florals on your own, using your own reference photos.
About the Instructor:
Francis Marte is a realistic watercolourist with years of professional experience. He has participated in various exhibits and has been featured in international watercolour publications. Francis possesses a strong sense of artistry, consistently displayed in all his art pieces. He is a well regarded watercolour instructor for emerging watercolourists.

Most supplies are included in the supply fee.
Instructor will provide watercolour paint, masking fluid, and photo reference.
The Paint Spot will provide watercolour paper (Arches 300lb cold press), watercolour brushes, 2 palettes, kneadable eraser, masking tape, mounting board.
Please Bring:
1. Handful of kitchen paper towels, ballpoint pen, 2 containers for water
2. Suitable art clothes, hand towel, notebook, snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer)

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
