Dramatic ocean waves are a great subject to paint. It’s especially effective to paint this scene in watercolour.
Painting beach scenes is how we can connect to the ocean even though we live so far away! Not to mention, this tutorial is the perfect way to sit back and relax!
The instructor will show you step-by-step on how to paint this scene using various techniques.
1. Assessing the reference photo
2. Outlining the waves, white water and surfer
3. Using masking fluid
4. Painting the sky using wet-on-wet
5. Painting the waves using wet-on-wet
6. Removing masking fluid and softening edges
7. Glazing and painting details using small brushes
8. Lifting paint pigments
9. Painting the surfer
10. Refining details
You will use a reference photo and only a little bit of drawing skills are necessary. The instructor will guide you with demos and useful critiques so you can continue to paint similar scenes on your own, using your own reference photos.
About the Instructor:
Francis Marte is a realistic watercolourist with years of professional experience. He has participated in various exhibits and has been featured in international watercolour publications. Francis possesses a strong sense of artistry, consistently displayed in all his art pieces. He is a well regarded watercolour instructor for emerging watercolourists.

Most supplies are included in the supply fee.
Instructor will provide watercolour paint, masking fluid, and photo reference.
The Paint Spot will provide watercolour paper (Arches 300lb cold press), watercolour brushes, palettes, kneadable eraser, masking tape, mounting board.
Please Bring:
- Handful of kitchen paper towels, ballpoint pen, 2 containers for water
- Suitable art clothes, hand towel, notebook, snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer)

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
