Canola Studies in Soft Pastel Workshop WITH DAVID SHKOLNY

Sunday, July 20

12:30 PM – 5:30 PM

$80 + Supply List

Class Limit: 15 Students

Beginners welcome!

A very popular prairie subject – pastel the luscious fields of yellow canola glowing beneath a summer storm.

In this class we will delve into 2-3 different studies that feature canola fields – under stormy clouds, in full sunlight and aerial views.

Learn how to balance the colour palette with bright and neutral hues, distinguish colour temperature and create a variety of strokes to depict the landscape. This is suitable for the beginner as well as the seasoned. Students will get swatches of the pastel colours needed in advance of the workshop.

Student Supplies:

  1. Set of good quality soft (chalk) pastels (Sennelier, Schmincke are good brands) minimum of 24 (the more, the better). It’s helpful to have a set of Nupastel in addition to the ones mentioned (they are harder, but good for detail and blending). The cheaper sets will not have good colour adhesion.
  2. Augment the set with some good darks, (almost black) like purple, red and green, as the palette will have more of the dark hues for much of the work.
  3. Pastel Premier paper 12 x 16” (1-2 sheets)
  4. Soft vine charcoal medium thickness (about ¼” diameter), not too skinny as they break easily and not too fat
  5. Kneadable eraser18″ ruler, masking tape, smooth drawing board around 14 x 18” (Masonite Panel works)
  6. Small bottle of isopropyl alcohol (70-99%) and a couple of flat brushes used for acrylic or oil in ¾” and ¼”
  7. Apron (protects clothes from pastels), suitable art clothes, snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer)

You will receive a 20% discount on all art supplies from your registration until the end of the class!

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
