The Light from Within – Transparent Oxides
Dug out of the earth and formed into sticks and mixed into paints, these pigments have been favored from prehistory through the Renaissance and into our own time.
Natural Iron Oxides are inorganic pigments which range from reddish brown to dark red violet and dull reddish yellow to orangish brown. These ancient pigments are known by many names. These include Red Ochre, Blood Stone (Sanguine), Terra Rosa (Red Earth), and Yellow Ochre, as well as Jaune de Fer (Iron Yellow).
Rembrandt Oil Transparent Oxides are a series of extremely transparent and durable earth colors. They are ideal for glazing and adding a layer of depth by allowing light to pass through. They also exhibit a high tinting strength without overpowering. Join Jeff Olson, Art Education Director for Royal Talens North America, for an informative look into the history of these colors, their composition, and general working properties. Including a demonstration of the excellent results that can be achieved when mixing the transparent oxides with primary colors.
