Often described as “painting on water” Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of creating patterns by sprinkling and brushing pigments on the surface of a liquid and picking them up with paper or fabric, creating uniquely colourful fluid art.
In this workshop, you’ll explore Ebru, the ancient Turkish art of marbling. You’ll learn the preparation and equipment required, some of the traditional marbling patterns, and how to create them while discussing the various inks and paints used for each.
Class 1: Participants will get a sample pack of papers, fabric, leather and wood, which we’ll use in our hands-on demonstration. Baths will be ready to go with over 40 colours for folks to work with. We’ll discuss surface tension and try a variety of classic marbling patterns. Homework would be to bring 3 paints/inks next class.
Class 2: How to prepare for marbling. In this class, we’ll go over how to prepare paint/ink for marbling and how to prepare the allum and carrageenan. We will also discuss sourcing materials and how to make marbling combs. This will prepare participants to prep any colour, paper or fabric they want to marble in the last classes.
Class 3 & 4: Folks will bring their own materials for marbling and any colours they have made. All of the classcolours will still be available, and a variety of sized trays will be ready to go, including a 32 by 32″ tray for larger projects.
