Stoneground Gouache 6 Set

The introductory Stoneground Gouache 6 palette contains a versatile combination of half pan gouache colours. This palette is perfect for capturing a variety of subject matter including landscapes, still life work, botanicals, and illustration. Combine Raw Umber Dark Neutral and Ultramarine Blue for deep shadows. Mix Naphthol Red and Hansa Yellow for brilliant orange hues, at home or in autumn landscapes. Cedar Leaf is a vibrant deep green, and a custom colour created in consultation with Stoneground in-house artists. Additionally, you can tint any of the above colours with Titanium White for pastel hues and highlights.

Stoneground gouache is a water-based media that dries to an opaque, matte finish. You can apply colours in layers, allowing you to refine and define your painting as you work. Because it is water-based, you can dilute gouache with water and used it wet-on-wet in the same manner as watercolour. Conversely, the chalk content in gouache means that it won’t bloom or flow like watercolour paint. You can lighten gouache by adding white, and layer it from dark to light due to its opaque nature. Colours are easily mixed with one another and can be used interchangeably with Stoneground watercolour paint.

The Stoneground Gouache 6 palette contains six half pans of handmade gouache in a hinged metal palette box. Measuring approximately 2 1/2” x 2”, this compact size is ideal for travel and plein air painting.

Modern Colours

Stoneground defines modern colours as those developed and discovered after 1704, which was when the accidental discovery of Prussian Blue occurred. The colours Stoneground classifies as such, contain organic and inorganic pigments and are typically characterized by their intense and bright appearance.

Traditional Colours

Traditional Gouache colours have been used by artists for hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of years.  These are primarily inorganic pigments such as iron oxides, green earths, as well as the popular umber and sienna pigments of the Renaissance. In some instances, they include the modern equivalent of a traditional pigment. For example, Titanium White, which replaces toxic Lead White in artist’s materials.
