Instructions for using Oil Grounds
Williamsburg Handmade Oils are known for their high quality, as well as their extensive palette of colors, including genuine Italian Earth Colors. Since joining the Golden Artist Colors family, the color palette has expanded to include French Earth Colors and a range of colors made from Safflower Oil.
Made in small batches, Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors are recognized for being richly pigmented and dense. Each color is treated individually, with each pigment ground to the nature of that specific color, bringing out the beauty and preserving the wider range of differences that were common in the past. The line of colors is guided by tradition with a recognition for modern organic pigments.
Originating from the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, Williamsburg now makes over 170 artist quality oil colors, as well as oil mediums and grounds in New Berlin, New York.
The Williamsburg Philosophy
Getting the proper pigment is just the beginning. So much of the quality of an oil paint is in the grinding of the pigment. Williamsburg grinds each pigment to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to that particular pigment. Some colors will feel slightly gritty, while others are extremely smooth. For example, Williamsburg Cerulean Blue has a beautiful, velvety, light absorbing surface with an extremely strong covering power. Conversely, Sienna colors are often gritty in order to allow light to travel through the vehicle. This exposes rich golden or mahogany undertones rather than just dull, heavy browns.
Artist grade pigments are ground in pure, premium, alkali-refined linseed oil and are made in small batches no larger than eight gallons at a time. This allows for total control over the product, much like the late nineteenth century French color makers. All the materials are hand measured, and every ounce of paint is scrutinized for quality.
Williamsburg offers technical advice to museums, and conservators, as well as artists all over the world and welcomes your questions and comments.
