Wondering how to paint a cat in watercolour? Cats are a favourite subject to paint, because of their adorable expressions, fur and colours of their eyes. This class is designed for watercolour artists with some experience.
The instructor will demonstrate how to paint an orange tabby cat using mostly wet-on-wet technique, so soft textures will be achieved. You will also learn how to paint confidently with speed, beneficial for wet-on-wet technique.
The instructor will show you through 10 – 15 minute demos, step-by-step:
1. Assessing the reference photo
2. Trace transferring the reference photo on watercolour paper
3. Using masking fluid to preserve white highlights of the eyes
4. Choosing limited, but the best colour pigments for this subject
5. Painting the head, body and tail in sections using wet-on-wet
6. Layering paints to achieve the correct values and contrasts
7. Painting the cat bed using wet-on-wet
8. Painting the tricky background + splattering
9. Lifting paint pigments
10. Carefully painting whiskers using gouache
11. Refining details
About the Instructor:
Francis Marte is a realistic watercolourist with years of professional experience. He has participated in various exhibits and has been featured in international watercolour publications. Francis possesses a strong sense of artistry, consistently displayed in all his art pieces. He is a well regarded watercolour instructor for emerging watercolourists.

Instructor will provide watercolour paint, masking fluid, and photo reference.
The Paint Spot will provide watercolour paper (Arches 300 lb cold press), watercolour brushes, palettes, kneadable eraser, masking tape, mounting board.
Please Bring:
1. Handful of kitchen paper towels, ballpoint pen, 2 containers for water
2. Suitable art clothes, hand towel, notebook, snack, drink, and your own PPE (mask, hand sanitizer)

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
