Artful Embroidery: 2 Mondays WITH DARCY HOOVER

Beginners Welcome!
In this course you will design and stitch a small needlework sampler learning basic counted-work embroidery stitches. Your design will be based on a selection of templates and stitches that you can creatively combine in class.
Your instructor will provide graphics, videos, and in-person advice on design, stitch choices and technique. This will include example of historic and modern samplers which you can use to inspire your sampler. Examples of what can be stitched into the sampler grid include text, repeating patterns, and simple stitched images. This project is ideal for stitching a birth or wedding announcement, for illustrating a favourite short poem or quote, or for telling a brief visual story.
Upon completing this course, students should have learned the following:
• differences in fabrics and threads used for basic needle arts
• how to attach an even weave fabric to a frame to keep the fabric taut
• how to transfer your designs onto the fabric
• several counted work stitches and designs
• how to start and finish threads with no visible knots
• some history of stitched samplers and girl’s education
About the Instructor: Darcy is a local fibre artist who has been embroidering for about three decades. In addition to her years of experience, she has completed the Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery program from the Royal School of Needlework in London UK and is working on their follow-up Diploma program. Darcy is a member of and on the board for the Edmonton Needlecraft Guild and has taught embroidery classes through the guild.
Please Bring:
1. Glasses or magnifying glass, needlethreader (optional)
2. Pencil, eraser, scissors, suitable art clothes, hand-towel/tea-towel, notepad, lunch, drink, and your own PPE (mask and hand sanitizer)

Artelier is located at 10045 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta (back alley entrance). The workshop space is one block south of The Paint Spot.
