Stoneground Paint Co. Gouache Naphthol Red

Stoneground gouache is a water-based media that dries to an opaque, matte finish. A versatile mixing colour, Naphthol Red is a clean, intense primary red and an excellent alternative to toxic Cadmium hues.

Artist Notes: Combine Naphthol Red with Delft Cobalt Blue for a lovely plum hue that is very useful in botanicals and for shadows in landscapes.

Opacity: Opaque

Paint Makers Notes: Naphthol Red was first used as an artist pigment during the 1920s. The name comes from the Greek word for mineral oil, a nod to the pigment’s petroleum-based origins.

Pigment Number: PR 170

Pigment Type: Synthetic Organic

Pigment Composition: Naphthol carbamide

Lightfastness: II – Very Good

Toxicity: Non-Toxic

Stoneground Paint Co. creates their handmade gouache by combining the world’s finest pigments as well as premium French chalk with a binder made from water, gum arabic, and honey. Colours are easily mixed with one another and can be used interchangeably with Stoneground watercolour paint.

Modern Colours

Stoneground defines modern colours as those developed and discovered after 1704. This was when the accidental discovery of Prussian Blue occurred. The colours Stoneground classifies as such, contain organic and inorganic pigments. Also, they are typically characterized by their intense and bright appearance.
