About the Painting

“Gabrielle d’Estrées and One of Her Sisters” is an oil painting attributed to a member of the Fontainebleau School, dating back to around 1594. The artwork portrays Gabrielle d’Estrées, the favorite mistress of King Henry IV of France, seated in a bathtub alongside her sister. In a striking and intimate gesture, Gabrielle’s sister pinches her, symbolically suggesting Gabrielle’s role as the king’s mistress and possibly hinting at her pregnancy. The painting is notable for its sensuality and mysteriousness, as well as its stunning use of detail and color, capturing the opulence and intrigue of the French court during the late Renaissance period.

The Fontainebleau School was a group of artists who were based at the royal palace of Fontainebleau during the late 16th century. They were heavily influenced by the Italian Renaissance and brought their own unique style to French art, combining elements of Mannerism, classicism, and naturalism. Many notable artists were associated with this school, including Rosso Fiorentino, Francesco Primaticcio, and Niccolò dell’Abbate.

One of the key characteristics of the Fontainebleau School was its focus on sensuality and eroticism in art. This can be seen in “Gabrielle d’Estrées and One of Her Sisters”.
