Williamsburg Linseed Oil Medium

Williamsburg Linseed Oil medium is a genuine alkali-refined linseed oil. This oil medium increases flow, transparency and gloss. A drying oil pressed from flax seeds, this genuine linseed oil forms a good, tough and resilient film. It is useful as an ingredient in painting mediums, and it is a traditional vehicle for oil paints. The Williamsburg Philosophy

Getting the proper pigment is just the beginning. So much of the quality of an oil paint is in the grinding of the pigment. Williamsburg grinds each pigment to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to that particular pigment. Some colors will feel slightly gritty, while others are extremely smooth. For example, Cerulean Blue has a beautiful velvety, light absorbing surface with an extremely strong covering power. Conversely, Sienna colors are often gritty to allow light to travel through the vehicle. This exposes rich golden or mahogany undertones instead of just heavy, dull browns.

Artist grade pigments are ground in pure, premium, alkali-refined linseed oil and are made in small batches no larger than eight gallons at a time. This allows for total control over the product, much like the late nineteenth century French color makers. All the materials are hand measured, and every ounce of paint is scrutinized for quality.

Williamsburg offers technical advice to museums, conservators and artists all over the world and welcomes your questions and comments.
