da Vinci Black Sable Filbert 1845
Black Sable
Russian black sable hair features a fine tip and a robust springiness. Due to its exceptional stability, which is unusual for natural hair brushes, the Black Sable is ideal for the classical techniques in oil painting and represents the alternative for the painter who is looking for a combination of the advantages of Kolinsky red sable and bristle artist brushes.
A Filbert Shape is a narrow, flat brush with hairs that come to a rounded point. Used on its side, a filbert gives a thin line; used flat it produces a broad brush stroke; and by varying the pressure as you apply the brush to canvas, or flicking it across, you can get a tapering mark. A filbert is our favourite brush shape because it can produce such a variety of marks.
