The Williamsburg Philosophy
Getting the proper pigment is just the beginning. So much of the quality of an oil paint is in the grinding of the pigment. Williamsburg grinds each pigment to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to that particular pigment. Some colors will feel slightly gritty, while others are extremely smooth. For example, Williamsburg Cerulean Blue has a beautiful, velvety, light absorbing surface with an extremely strong covering power. Conversely, Sienna colors are often gritty in order to allow light to travel through the vehicle. This exposes rich golden or mahogany undertones rather than just dull, heavy browns.
Artist grade pigments are ground in pure, premium, alkali-refined linseed oil. These paints are made in small batches no larger than eight gallons at a time. This allows for total control over the product, much like the late nineteenth century French color makers. All the materials are hand measured, and every ounce of paint is scrutinized for quality.
Williamsburg offers technical advice to museums, and conservators, as well as artists all over the world. They welcome your questions and comments.
