February 5th – March 11th, 2025
Naess Gallery at the Paint Spot
10032 81 Ave. NW, Edmonton, AB
With this show I’d like to invite you behind the scenes to see some drawings that were really done solely as preliminary sketches. As a cartoonist, I’ve always loved the pared down, unself-conscious rough qualities that preliminary sketches have. And, for that reason, I’ve always been reluctant to show them.
But now’s the time.
This series of sketches showcases drawings of Edmonton musicians, a subject that has always been dear to me. As a testament to my own misspent youth as an orchestral musician and dance accompanist in Edmonton I’ve always loved drawing musicians doing what they do. And hopefully catching some of the magic with those drawings.
Gerry Rasmussen is an internationally syndicated cartoonist who draws the daily comic strip, Betty, which appears in newspapers and magazines in seven countries. Before Betty, they produced the full-colour comic page, Bub Slug for The Edmonton Journal.
Although most of Gerry’s work is ink on paper he is always experimenting with new ways to make images, from drawing with twigs and sponges dipped in ink, to painting with coloured ink on birch panels.

Named for Sidsel Naess Bradley, The Paint Spot’s founder. who recognized the need for spaces that promote the exploration of artistic ideas and innovative processes. We are extremely proud of this heritage and its contribution to the development of many artists. Naess Gallery continues to be inclusive, encouraging dialogue among artists and visitors. We welcome proposals for exhibitions that push materials, techniques, subject matter, and conceptions.
In planning the Exhibition Year, we will be inviting artists whose practices we admire to exhibit their new works. It will be a year to revisit artists who have shown in the Naess Gallery in the past and to reveal new artists as well. We are going to see an exciting and enriching program of shows! If you have questions about the Naess Gallery or its exhibition program, please ask Kim Fjordbotten phone 780 432 0240.
