Stoneground Paint Co. Gouache

Stoneground gouache is a water-based paint that dries to an opaque, matte finish. These gouache paints are easily mixed with one another and can also be used together with Stoneground watercolour paint. Raw Umber Dark Neutral is a dark, dull, earth brown, a colour resembling dark chocolate. It is useful in landscapes, botanicals, and wildlife paintings, as well as in portraiture.

Artists Notes: Raw Umber Dark Neutral, as its name suggests, has a neutral undertone that makes it useful for darkening other colours.

Paint Makers Notes: The popularity of umber pigments exploded during the Baroque period in Europe where they were used extensively to produce dark shadows and dramatic lighting effects in everything from portraits to landscapes and still life compositions.

Traditional Colours

Traditional Gouache colours have been used by artists for hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of years.  These are primarily inorganic pigments such as iron oxides, green earths, as well as the popular umber and sienna pigments of the Renaissance. In some instances, they include the modern equivalent of a traditional pigment. For example, Titanium White, which replaces toxic Lead White in artist’s materials.
