Montana TECH Varnish Spray

Montana Varnish Spray is an Acid free, quick drying, clear varnish made of acrylic base. No yellowing or de-saturation. For interior and exterior use. Can be used for art, hobby, crafts and DIY. Available in gloss, semi-gloss, matte finish. Gloss level shown on donut (see top of can). Protects and fixes paint on surfaces like canvas, paper, charcoal drawing, and wood, as well as photos, etc. Montana Varnish protects against oxidation and UV light. The more coats applied, the stronger the UV protection. During application, protect the object and the surrounding area from spray. Surfaces should be dry, clean of dust, and oils as well as rust before applying the varnish.

Shake can well for 2-3 minutes upside down to take advantage of gravity. Remove the safety ring by removing the nozzle and turning the can upside down allowing it to fall out. Then re-apply the nozzle. Apply varnish in several thin layers, spraying before the previous coat is fully dry  but with 2 minutes between each pass. Further coats might require a drying time of 24 hours or more depending on substrate. For optimal lifespan, always store cans with the nozzle on. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH SYNTHETIC BASE LACQUERS. Always test spray on a non-visible area to check compatibility of lacquer or paint.

FAQ

WHAT IS MONTANA VARNISH?

Montana VARNISH is an acrylic based clear coating that can be used to seal and protect art, hobby, crafts and DIY projects.

WHAT SURFACES CAN I USE MONTANA VARNISH ON?

Montana VARNISH can be used on many surfaces including paint (with the exception of synthetic based paint), canvases, paper, charcoal, drawings, various fibers, wood and photos.

DOES IT COME IN DIFFERENT FINISHES? AND WHEN DO I USE WHICH ONE?

Yes. Montana VARNISH comes in three different finishes. Gloss Varnish, Semi Gloss Varnish and Matte Varnish. Each varnish enables users to achieve a finish as desired. Gloss levels are as depicted on the donuts on top of the cans. As the function of all three is the same, deciding which one to use when is a subjective to the finish that is desired for the project.

IS THE MONTANA VARNISH ARCHIVAL?

Yes. Montana VARNISH is acid free, archival and non-yellowing. It does not desaturate your artworks and can be used for interior and exterior use. All varnishes contain UV blockers to protect your projects. The more coats applied, the greater the UV protection.

HOW DO I START USING MY MONTANA VARNISH CAN?

Remove the spray nozzle and turn the can upside down. Strike with your palm allowing safety ring to fall out. Shake vigorously for 2-3 minutes ensuring you can hear the mixing balls moving freely. Replace the cap back onto the top of the can valve and trigger away from substrate to test. If flowing freely you can start painting.

IS MONTANA VARNISH ACRYLIC?

Montana VARNISHES are solvent based, nitro-acrylic paint. The solvents evaporate rapidly once applied leaving a clear protective, acrylic coating behind once dry.

IS MONTANA VARNISH SPRAY LOW PRESSURE?

Montana VARNISH is low pressure, meaning the gasses in the can allow the varnish to be ejected slowly and smoothly. This can reduce spray dust, improve precision and increase how accurately users can apply varnish.

HOW FAR SHOULD I HOLD THE CAN AWAY FROM THE SUBSTRATE WHILE PAINTING?

Optimum distance from substrate is normally between 15cm and 25cm depending on your task. The closer you hold the can, the more paint is applied to a smaller area. The further away you hold it, the thinner the paint film applied will be.

HOW LONG DOES MONTANA VARNISH TAKE TO DRY?

Drying time is usually 10 minutes to be touch dry. This can vary depending on substrate, ambient temperature, humidity levels and thickness of coats applied. The three stages of drying are apx: touch dry in 10 mins, working dry in 60 mins and chemically cured in 24 hours.

MY MONTANA VARNISH HAS WRINKLED. WHY IS THIS?

To guarantee no wrinkling, you need to apply the varnish in thin coats and ideally allow the varnish time to cure before applying further coats. As all coatings shrink to some degree when drying, wrinkling occurs when one layer of varnish is drying and pulling the level below it that has not yet cured. A cured layer can with stand this movement.

CAN I PAINT OVER MONTANA VARNISH SPRAY WITH OTHER PAINTS?

You can paint over Montana Varnish with oil based paints once the varnish has cured. Painting over with acrylic paints can work, but may result in cracking at a later stage subject to the quality of the acrylic paint. MONTANA VARNISH is NOT compatible with synthetic based lacquers!

HOW DO I GET SMOOTH COVERAGE?

It is very important to shake well and apply all coats thinly. Changing your application direction (horizontal and vertical) after each coat is also beneficial.
