Methylcellulose Powder

Methylcellulose is a neutral pH, water reversible adhesive that dries clear. Use it for book repair, gluing end sheets, archival adhesive applications and more. This adhesive is great for long term stability. It is also excellent for use in repairs, bookbinding, and art construction, as well as hinging. The adhesive is reversible with cold water.

This product listing is for approx. 40g of methyl cellulose powder, in a 4 oz plastic jar.

Methylcellulose (or methyl cellulose) is a chemical compound derived from cellulose. It is a hydrophilic white powder in pure form and dissolves in cold (but not hot) water. In cold water it forms a clear, viscous solution or gel. Methyl cellulose is used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products, as a binder, water retention agent, and even as a treatment for constipation. Like natural cellulose, it is not digestible, not toxic, and not an allergen.

Methylcellulose has multiple uses. Use it as a thickener for paper marbling baths, as well as a binder, emulsifier or consistency modifier for water-based paints. It can be used as a mild resoluble glue which can be washed away with water. It may also be used in the fixation of delicate pieces of art, as well as in conservation to loosen and clean off old glue from canvas or book boards. Methyl cellulose is also the main ingredient in many wallpaper pastes and is used as a binder in pastel crayons and in many medications. Methyl cellulose is also used as sizing in the production of paper and textiles, because it protects the fibers from absorbing water or oil.

Use this binder to make watercolors, gouache or other water based emulsion paints. Simply mix with dry pigments or aqua-dispersions. Absolutely non toxic, this binder is also resoluble.

Methyl Cellulose Adhesive Recipe:

(No preservatives  = One Time For Individual Use)

  1. Add one rounded tablespoon of methyl cellulose powder to 1/2 cup distilled water. Stir, and let stand for several hours.
  2. Thin to the consistency of mayonnaise with distilled water.
  3. It keeps for several weeks and does not require refrigeration.

Makes One Quart:

  1. Using a one quart container, sprinkle 5 tablespoons of methylcellulose powder into one cup of very hot water. Stir briskly in order to prevent lumps.
  2. Once the powder is thoroughly dispersed, add enough cold water to make one quart.
  3. Let stand several hours, overnight if possible.
  4. To thin, add several drops of water, mix, then let stand.
  5. When ready to use, pour a small amount into a separate container for active use. Cover and store the main supply separately in order to prevent contamination or spoiling.
