Capture the beauty and movement of the Northern Lights using watercolor in this step-by-step workshop. These simple landscapes can be done by beginner to advanced students.
Learn to:
• work with pouring and wet into wet to create movement in a night sky
• mix colors to create the night scene
• use photo references and imagination to sketch out ideas for a painting the landscape
• combine different watercolor techniques to achieve the elements in the landscape

About the Instructor: Julie Drew captures the beauty of majestic mountains, stunning waterfalls, and details of flowers using watercolor and mixed media to capture the depths and nuances of color, light, shadow and shape of the world around her. She also makes handmade paper and incorporates it into her scenic paintings. Julie has been painting and teaching art for over 30 years and holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. She continues to grow as an artist exploring different techniques, which she can then share with her students. Julie teaches watercolor, papermaking, mixed media, color pencil, and acrylic, and connects art and faith, teaching retreats and workshops. Her work has been exhibited around Alberta and has been purchased for private collections in Canada, the United States, Australia, France and China.

Watercolors: tube paint

– Dioxazine purple or Deep, dark purple
– Alizarin crimson
– Phthalo blue
– Lemon yellow
– Permanent Green

Palette for watercolor
Arches 140 lb cold press full sheet, tear into quarters
Masking fluid, sea sponge
1 inch flat brush
1 Rigger brush
1 Small Round brush
– Assorted other brushes
Pencil and eraser
Painting boards (tape on watercolour paper) heavy cardboard or Masonite boards are good options
Green painter’s tape, container for water
– Rag/paper towel, old toothbrush, salt, cling wrap
– (optional – permanent ink pen with fine tip)
– Small sketchbook, Photo references (optional): northern lights, landscapes in the dark
– Your own apron, PPE: Mask, hand sanitizer, lunch, and a drink
